Rider women’s soccer picked up their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Delaware State University at Ben Cohen Field on Sept. 3, before dropping on the road with a 2-1 decision to Quinnipiac University on Sept. 6.
First taste of victory
After nine minutes of back-to-back-to-back fouls and missed penalty kicks, junior back Courtney Carter buried her shot to give the Broncs the lead.
In the next nine minutes, sophomore forward Tess Ferrie set up junior forward Ava Ferrie, who slotted a clean shot into the center of the net to put the Broncs up 2-0.
The game continued with 23 straight minutes of no scoring, with five unsuccessful goals from the Hornets and the Broncs.
Tess Ferrie ended the first period scoring spree with a bottom right corner shot in the 44th minute, sending Rider into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.
Both Rider and Delaware State faced troubles in scoring from beginning to end in the second period.
Two missed shots from the Broncs and six misses from the Hornets were seen in the second half, as well as a yellow card for both teams early in the period.
No scoring in the final 45 minutes of the game resulted in the Broncs gaining their first win, 3-0 against Delaware State.
With Carter setting the tone and the Ferrie sisters combining for two goals, the Broncs showed what they are capable of when everything clicks.
“It’s always important to get a win and the first win in any season feels good,” Head Coach Drayson Hounsome said. “It will build confidence on making our home field a place where teams hate to come and play.”
Bobcats bite back
Coming off a victory, it did not take long for the Broncs to put one up in their second game of the week, their first in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season.
With an assist from Tess Ferrie, Ava Ferrie found the back of the net to score the first goal of the game in just two minutes.
From there, the pace of the game slowed, with neither team able to generate momentum on the field, leaving the game scoreless for the next 23 minutes.
Quinnipiac broke this streak with the final goal of the period, putting up a 1-1 tie on the scoreboard going into the second half.
The Bobcats wasted no time in the second period, netting an immediate goal to put the Broncs down 2-1.
The game continued with both teams combining for a series of seven missed shots for the remainder of the period.
Rider fell short 2-1 on the road in Connecticut, bringing their overall record to 1-3-2 and their conference record to 0-1.
The Broncs will be back at home on Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. to host the University of Albany Great Danes.
