Letter to the Editor: AI use needs to be stopped

Somewhere in the world, a professor is reporting a student for using artificial intelligence as a shortcut, instead of using their brain. Somewhere in the world, a person is using a chatbot instead of talking to a therapist. A few weeks ago, a person at Rider used artificial intelligence to make promotional posters for a school event. This is a serious problem that we need to fix.

After @riderstudentlife posted on Instagram, I went immediately to send an email to administration, expressing my concerns. We have several talented artists on campus, from the graphic design club to the game design folks — there are plenty of individuals who would be excited for the opportunity to improve their portfolios. I am greatly disappointed that Rider has hired a social media manager who, I am assuming, is paid to create AI-generated content.

It would benefit both students and administration to give students the opportunity to use their gifts and make content for social media posts for a variety of events — it could potentially be an internship or a job for a student’s resume. Giving opportunities to active students and highlighting their work is much more honorable than a robot ruining the environment.

Although I am no longer a student at Rider, I beg current students to stand up to administration for the sake of your education and future careers. This is a battle that will continue, and it takes your voices to be heard.
